OPERATING PARTICIPANT OF DISNEY PARKS & RESORTS

For 100 magical years, the master storytellers behind The Walt Disney Company have been inspiring audiences with their artistry. Since the beginning, Walt understood the importance of his artists and their ability to illustrate raw, genuine imagination. His appreciation extended first hand to Jess Rubio, the founder of Disney Parks & Resorts’ first operating participant.

In 1957, a humble Cal Arts graduate by the name of Jess Rubio began his career drawing portraits at Disneyland. After a mere 2 weeks as a cast member, he ran into a man walking the park who was “wearing a little mustache”. That man would turn out to be none other than Walt Disney.

Jess introduced himself, and eventually had numerous run-ins with Walt during his time at Disneyland. He even drew his caricature during Disneyland’s 10th anniversary. Rubio and Disney’s business relationship continued to flourish over the following years.

Throughout his career, Walt continuously strived to add creative talent and artistry to all facets of his park. Thus, in 1962, he personally oversaw The Walt Disney Company’s first official contract with Jess Rubio, resulting in the foundation of our company, Rubio Arts. The newly established company, however, did not limit itself to just Disneyland.

At that time, Walt had his sights set on 27,000 acres of property in Central Florida. These endless miles of orange groves would eventually become Walt Disney World Resort. In preparation for its grand opening in October of 1971, Rubio Arts was invited to become one of the very first third party operating participants of Walt Disney World.

Rubio Arts planted roots at Walt Disney World right down the middle of Main Street, U.S.A. Initial offerings at this singular location included nothing more than pastel portraits. Today, along with our portraits, we offer custom caricatures, free-hand silhouettes, personalized painted parasols, and everyone’s favorite balloons.

Sadly, Jess Rubio passed away in October of 2010, but his legacy still carries on through our brilliant vendors and artists.
