International Firefighters’ Day is a time to express our gratitude for their courage, dedication, and unwavering service. Established in 1999 after the tragic loss of 5 firefighters in a bushfire in Victoria, Australia, this day recognizes the sacrifices made by firefighters everywhere. May 4th specifically, however, is the feast day of Saint Florian, the Catholic Church’s patron saint of firefighters. Saint Florian, a 3rd century Roman soldier, is revered for his legendary acts of bravery, including saving a town from a devastating fire. Thus, his legacy serves as a spiritual symbol of protection and courage for firefighters around the globe.
