DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PORTRAITS & CARICATURES

In the world of art and illustration, 2 popular forms stand out: portraits and caricatures. At our Magic Kingdom location, our artists illustrate both art forms interchangeably and effortlessly. So, we implored our artists to explain the differences between portraits and caricatures.

PORTRAITS

Portraits are known for their lifelike quality, aiming to provide an accurate representation of their subject. They typically feature a more neutral background, allowing the focus to remain on the subject’s likeness. Rubio Arts portraits do not include a body. Rather, they focus solely on the face. A portrait artist strives to capture the subject’s likeness and proportions accurately, avoiding exaggerated features or distortions. The colors used in portraits are often more subdued, enhancing the realism of the artwork.

CARICATURES

In contrast, caricatures are characterized by their exaggerated and satirical features. Artists will amplify physical features of the subject, allowing for a more humorous representation. The art form aims to evoke laughter and amusement, as opposed to providing a realistic depiction. These illustrations often feature bold colors, even extending to the background. This technique creates a vibrant and eye-catching appearance. Unlike portraits, Rubio Arts caricatures can include background images, such as castles or balloons. Extra magical touches like these add to the whimsical nature of the artwork. Caricatures also feature harsher outlines, giving them a more cartoon-like appearance.
